Melitta Calibra Coffee Grinder Full Review

Melitta Calibra coffee grinder has been with me for almost a year. However, we waited until we could give you full feedback. That meant a lot of use. Well, this grinder has passed all our tests with an almost perfect score.

That also meant Melitta Molino lost its position as our favorite small grinder. Well, that’s life.

Melitta Calibra Coffee Grinder Overview

Melitta Calibra – pineapple for scale

Performance And Features – 9/10

I use this coffee grinder daily for AeroPress and my faithful French press. Hence, I set it in a range from fine to coarse. The grind quality is almost perfect every time, especially considering the relatively low price.

The grinder has 39 different grind settings for all the coffee aficionados obsessed with precision. For simplicity, we divided them into three parts:

  • Fine settings: 1-5
  • Medium: 6-26
  • Coarse: 27-39

You can change the grind level by twisting the bean container. The system is unusual but effective. Besides the number scale, there are also a few helpful icons.  For instance, in there is a small picture of a French press above number 33.

Noise – 9/10

Melitta Calibra coffee grinder is a silent beast, even if you grind large quantities of beans. Sometimes it hits that annoying frequency out of the blue. I don’t know why.

Maintenance 8/10

This is yet another almost perfect example of Melitta company efficiency. Melitta Calibra coffee grinder is incredibly easy to clean, with no obsolete parts. The thing that annoys me is the round shape of the coffee container. A round lid with a hole in the middle also means putting more effort into cleaning after every use.

Also, I noticed fine ground sticking to the container walls when the air is a bit drier.

Easiness Of Use 9/10

Melitta Calibra coffee grinder is user-friendly and highly effective. There is no way to misuse this machine. The only mildly confusing part is the built-in scale. However, I found it easier not to use it. What’s the reason? The built-in scale has deviations that are usually not that drastic, but they annoy me.

Sturdiness – 10/10

All the parts are sturdy and durable. The most suspicious part was the cylinder-shaped ground container, but I dropped it a few times, and it’s still good.

Three Individual Grinding Programs

Melitta Calibra has three individual grinding programs:

The number of cups – choose the number of cups you will brew (up to 10 cups). The grinder is factory set to 7gr of coffee per cup, but you can configure the dose from five to nine grams.

Weigh – choose how many grams you want to grind (up to 100 gr). You can also set tare weight.

Manual – you start and stop the grinding as you wish

Melitta Calibra manual mode – my favorite

I have noticed that the built-in scale is not 100% reliable. Sure, it won’t make 5 gr mistakes, but a few grams plus-minus can play a significant part in brewing. So, I still trust my kitchen scale more, and I use the manual program.

The lack of precision of the scale is one of the rare disadvantages this coffee grinder has. Still, it’s not a deal breaker for me.

How To Use Melitta Calibra Coffee Grinder (step-by-step)

Although this is a pretty intuitive grinder, a little how-to guide is always good.

  1. Pick a grind level by rotating the bean container.
  2. Press ON to turn the grinder on, then press Select to choose the individual grinding program.
  3. Put the beans inside and press the ON button again.
  4. If you choose the manual mode, press the ON button again to stop it. The other two modes will automatically stop. You can end the automatic modes, also by pressing the ON button.
  5. Your coffee is now inside a detachable cylindrical container, and the grinder’s job is done.
  6. You can also grind coffee directly in Melitta coffee filters if you wish. The compliant filters are 1×4, 1×2, and 102.

How To Clean Melitta Calibra

In the package, you will also get a small brush that is especially useful for cleaning the grind heads. The upper grind head is detachable, and so are the grinder ring and bean container.

To remove the bean container, you should press and hold the button located on its bottom and at the same time, turn the bean container anti-clockwise. It sounds complicated, but it isn’t.

All in all, this grinder is easy to clean, although you shouldn’t put any part of it in the dishwasher or clean it with stronger detergents. Warm water is all you need for this beauty. As for the grinding mechanism, you only need to brush it firmly. Don’t use water.
